隋朝开凿大运河之后，天津便快速发展起来。到了13世纪的元朝，天津已经是全国的交通和商业中心。
以前天津被称为直沽,直到1404年才由永乐皇帝改名为“天津”, 意为“天子渡河的地方”。这是因为从侄子手中夺取皇帝宝座的时候，永乐皇帝确实从天津渡河。后来，永乐皇帝在天津建城驻垒,设立“天津卫”，意为“保卫天津”。

天津市行政区划
天津下辖18个区、县，其中包括15个区，3个县。
天津市区有6个：和平区，河西区，河北区，南开区，河东区和红桥区。
滨海区有3个：塘沽区、汉沽区、大港区。
近郊区有4个：津南区，东丽区，西青区，北辰区。
远郊区、县为：宝坻区、武清区、蓟县、静海县、宁河县。
另外，天津经济技术开发区(TEDA)虽然不列入正式的行政区划，但享有与正式行政辖区类似的权利。
